Single Note Funk Riffs | Three Mistakes to Avoid!

This batch of bonus content is based on the following free YouTube lesson - Single Note Funk Riffs | Three Mistakes to Avoid!

Be sure to watch that first before you dive into any of the bonus content found here!

Do you struggle with playing funky riffs like John Frusciante and John Mayer? Do you get a lot of unwanted open strings and/or fretted notes ringing out when you don’t want them to? Do you struggle to ‘loosen up’ with your strumming when playing in a funk style?

If you answers to the above are a resounding 'yes', this YouTube video (& the bonus content here) is for you! In the YouTube lesson you'll see me demonstrate three common mistakes that I see a lot of guitar players make when attempting to... funk.

The first mistake is not using the wrist. Funk-based strumming is all about loosening up the right hand when you play. If when you're strumming, all of the motion is coming from your elbow alone, it's likely that you're gonna sound quite stiff and rigid. Of course we don't want to sound that way when we're going for a funky vibe, so incorporating your wrist into the up/down strumming motion will go a long way when it comes to helping you loosen up.

The second mistake is not using accents. Accents are all about dynamics - when you accent certain notes with your strumming, you're attacking them with a louder, more aggressive dynamic than other notes. In the YouTube video you'll hear me demonstrate how adding accents to certain notes can dramatically change the sound of your funk strumming.

The third mistake is not muting effectively. Due to the way you'll be strumming these single-note funk exercises, you won't be able to rely on your strumming hand to mute strings, in the same way that you would be if you were alternate picking with your hand anchored to the bridge. What that means is that you're gonna have to put the muting focus on your fretting hand instead. In the YouTube video I demonstrate a few things you'll want to be mindful of if you are brand new to muting with this hand.
